FAQ

Who is eligible for support from the Illinois Gender-Affirming Care Fund?

The fund is available to individuals 18 years old and under who need financial assistance to access gender-affirming medical care. Applicants may be Illinois residents or individuals traveling to Illinois to receive care from qualified providers.

What types of care does the fund help cover?

The Illinois Gender-Affirming Care Fund helps cover the cost of medically necessary and life saving gender-affirming healthcare, which may include consultations, treatment, and other related medical services recommended by qualified healthcare providers. This includes hormone blockers etc.

Do I need to provide my income level to qualify?

No, we do not ask for any of your personal income information. We know there are so many situations within a family that no matter your income it may be hard to impossible to afford access to care. There will be the ability to show proof of Medicaid, WIC, SNAP and other programs to be considered for a higher level of funding.

If we get approved for a grant, what happens next?

All funding will go directly to your medical care provider, pharmacy or other service providers. Prior to approval you will meet with one of our team members to discuss your need so we are able to assist seamlessly once you are approved for funds.

Why was the fund created?

The fund was created to help ensure that young people do not lose access to essential, life-saving medical care due to shifting policies and financial barriers. As access to gender-affirming care becomes increasingly restricted in many places, our goal is to bridge the gap and keep care accessible to those who need it most.

Do I need to live in Illinois to apply?

No. While the fund supports Illinois residents, it is also available to individuals who travel to Illinois to access gender-affirming care because services may not be available where they live.

How do I apply for support?

Families or guardians can apply through our online application form. Applications are reviewed confidentially, and our team works to respond as quickly as possible based on available funding.

How much financial support can someone receive?

Funding amounts vary depending on the type of care needed, individual circumstances, and the resources currently available in the fund. Our goal is to support as many young people as possible while making a meaningful impact on their ability to access care.

Is the application process confidential?

Yes. Protecting the privacy and safety of applicants and their families is extremely important to us. All personal information submitted during the application process is handled confidentially.

How is the fund supported?

The Illinois Gender-Affirming Care Fund is supported through community donations, partnerships, fundraising events, and grants. Every contribution helps expand access to care for young people who need it.

How can I help support the fund?

You can support the Illinois Gender-Affirming Care Fund by donating, partnering with us, attending fundraising events, or helping spread awareness about the need for accessible gender-affirming care.

Will the fund expand beyond Illinois?

As the fund grows, we hope to expand our reach nationally so that more young people across the country can access gender-affirming care, regardless of where they live. We are looking for funding partners to help us expand. You can reach out to us through our contact form to learn more.
